The Swiss city Geneva has an excellent public transportation system with many discount ticket options for both local residents and short-term visitors. Trains, trams, buses, and boats on Lake Geneva are all included in the standard transportation tickets allowing for smooth transits and easy connections across the network to all parts of Genève Ville (city) and Canton. Passengers arriving at Geneva Airport (GVA) and all hotel guests receive free public transportation tickets and passes. Day passes are generally the best option for other travelers if more than two journeys are planned for the day.
Free Public Transportation Tickets for Tourists in Geneva, Switzerland
Many visitors to Geneva qualify for handy free public transportation passes. Passengers arriving at Geneva Airport (GVA) may draw a free “Tout Genève” ticket from the public transportation vending machine in the baggage claim arrivals hall. This ticket is valid for 80 minutes on all trains, trams, buses, and boats in the Geneva public transportation network.
Travelers spending a night in hotels, hostels, or camping grounds in Geneva receive a free Geneva Transport Card – a special tourist ticket valid on the entire public transportation network. Ask for it at check-in, as this transportation ticket is valid from check-in until midnight on the day of departure.
Standard and Savings Tickets for Geneva Public Transportation
Several ticket options are available for Geneva public transportation system but for short-term visitors to Geneva, the following four tickets are of most interest:
- Saut de Puce / Short Trip Ticket (CHF2) – may be used for trips of up to three stops on trams or buses (no transfers allowed) or a single mouette ferry boat crossing (not valid on route M3).
- Tout Genève / All Geneva Standard Ticket (CHF3 / EUR 2) – valid for up to an hour of travel on Geneva public transportation. Transfers and reverse direction travel allowed.
- Carte 9 h à minuit / 9 am to Midnight Ticket (CHF7) – valid on all Geneva public transportation from 9 am to midnight. A great bargain.
- Carte 24 heures / 24 h Ticket (CHF10) – valid for 24 hours on all Geneva public transportation. On weekends, two may travel for the price of one on the 24h ticket (but solo travelers do not receive a discount).
These tickets cover the whole canton of Genève, which include Geneva city, some smaller villages and countryside areas, as well as crossing Lac Léman on four small passenger ferry boat routes. Additional fares are payable once buses cross into France or into the neighboring canton Vaud.
Buying Tickets for Geneva Public Transportation
Tickets are sold at vending machines only and are not available in buses, trams, trains, or boats. Buying tickets is a simple three-step process with instructions given in both French and English.
Use correct change in Swiss franc or euro coins – change is not given and cards generally not accepted. Overpaying is registered on the ticket but reclaiming the difference is hardly worth the required effort.
Tickets are automatically time-stamped and thus need no further validation prior to boarding. Tickets are usually checked before boarding mouette ferry boats and often on trains. On trams and buses the honor system is used but backed up by unforgiving inspectors.
Children under 6 travel for free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (but not when traveling in a group). Children 6 to 16 pay the reduced fee – also consider obtaining a Junior Card, which is valid throughout Switzerland for a year. Bearers of the Swiss railways half-price card pay the reduce fee too.
Geneva’s buses and trams are the easiest way to travel through this internationally-minded Swiss city. The Mouettes ferry boats are a great way to save on cruising on Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) and especially fun when traveling with children.
