The Swiss National Museum in Château de Prangins near Nyon focuses on the culture and history of French-speaking Western Switzerland. It is a great day trip from Geneva.

The Western Switzerland branch of the Swiss National Museum is located in the pretty, early eighteenth-century Château de Prangins castle near Nyon to the north of Geneva. The museum presents the history of Switzerland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with special emphasis on the French-speaking cantons. The collections range from coins to coaches and porcelain to furniture. The exhibits are easy to enjoy even by children and visitors not particularly interested in the finer details of Swiss history. The Château de Prangins is a great day-trip destination from Geneva or Lausanne.

The Swiss National Museum in Château de Prangins

The eclectic collection of the Swiss National Museum (Musée National Suisse / Schweizerisches Landesmuseum) in Western Switzerland is spread over four floors of the Château de Prangins castle. The château, dating from 1730, was once home to Voltaire and Joseph Bonaparte, and was converted into the present museum only in 1998.

The focus of the museum in Prangins Castle is on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. On the ground floor, the emphasis is on the home life of the bourgeoisie and rich with exhibitions of furniture, musical instruments, kitchen implements, and other objects that were in daily use centuries ago. On the first floor, the exhibits are more focused on the development of Swiss history as well as the institutions and instruments of the federal government.

The top floor in the roof of the Château de Prangins has a small exhibition on Switzerland’s contacts with the wider world. In the cellar is a further small exhibition on transportation and the construction of the castle.

The Château de Prangins faces Lake Geneva and the Alps, including Mont Blanc, to the south and the Jura Mountains to the north. On the northern side, the large wall-enclosed historical kitchen garden is replanted each year with typical plants, including poisonous ones, which would have featured in the garden during the eighteenth century.

When driving on the highway Autoroute A1, use either the exit for Nyon or Gland and follow the brown Château de Prangins signs. Sign posting is equally clear when using the picturesque lakeside Route Suisse with the castle directly next to the road just outside Nyon. Ample free parking is available near the port or uphill behind the castle garden.

Many medieval villages, museums, and castles can be seen in the Lake Geneva region. In the Lac Léman region, the historic Château de Chillon near Montreux is a particularly popular day-trip destination from Geneva, Lausanne, and ski resorts in both France and Switzerland.
