Tourism in Switzerland's Franches MontagnesIdyllic Nature and Rich Culture in Northwestern Switzerland
This high plateau on Switzerland's northwestern border is a lovely destination for horseback riding, hiking, cross-country skiing and both summer and winter sports.
At 1000 meters above sea level, this unspoiled landscape offers a wide variety of outdoor activities and cultural delights. From rolling pasture land to dense forests to high altitude lakes, the Franches Montagnes extend in an arc between the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds and the small village of Glovelier. Originally a part of Switzerland’s watch making industry, the Franches Montagnes region is steeped in history and culture. Winter and Summer Sports in the Franches MontagnesThe smooth rolling hills and flat plains of the Franches Montagnes are perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoe trekking. Hundreds of marked and unmarked trails wind between the region’s picturesque villages. Maps and detailed information for hiking, skiing and snowshoeing can be found in English at the Jura Tourism website. There are also several prepared trails for sledding and a large ice skating rink in the town of Saignelégier. Another great spot can be found at the Gruère pond, which freezes over every winter offering an idyllic setting for snowy picnics and outdoor ice skating. There is a well-marked walking path encircling the pond with educational signs for children. Summertime activities include hiking, golfing, horseback riding, and both tour biking and mountain biking. Visit the Cerletaz Nature Center to gather useful information on the region and its wildlife or climb to the top of the Sommêtres Rock for a breathtaking view of the Doubs River basin. Franches Montagnes Horses – A Longstanding TraditionThe region is extremely proud of its Franches Montagnes horses, the only breed of horse originating in Switzerland. These are medium-sized, sturdy horses perfect for carriage driving and leisure riding. Not surprisingly, the region is criss-crossed with over 200 kilometers of riding trails. There are even possibilities for exploring the Franches Montagnes in a covered wagon. Each year in August the town of Saignelégier welcomes the Marché Concours, a national equestrian competition and festival. Tens of thousands of visitors flock to the region for parades, competitions and expositions. This is the Franches Montagnes’ biggest event, so accommodations must be booked several months in advance. Regional Gastronomy and Other Activities in the Franches MontagnesFrom rustic inns to high gastronomy, the Franches Montagnes has a restaurant to satisfy your appetite. Of note are the Café du Soleil in Saignelégier, which also offers art exhibits and a full musical program, the Georges Wenger restaurant in Le Noirmont, and the Hôtel du Doubs in Goumois. The small village of les Emibois boasts an exceptional bakery called Au Pain d’Antan. In addition to the abundant sports and nature activities in the Franches Montagnes, there is also an artisanal brasserie (La Meule, Saignelégier), an ostrich breeding center, a breathtaking collection of stained-glass windows in the region’s numerous churches, several art galleries and an antique car museum. With activities for the entire family and a beautiful high-plateau landscape, Switzerland’s Franches Montagnes in the canton of Jura is a perfect getaway in both summer and winter.
